Learning is a personal and complex process unique to every human being. Understanding the science of learning can provide valuable insights and strategies to help students thrive academically and personally.

At Great Minds Virtual, we embrace our students on an individual level to provide the necessary support to help them thrive in an evolving world. We begin with top-tier knowledge-building curricula which strengthens their understanding of the natural world. In our virtual classroom, students have intentional and rich discussions to enhance their comprehension and communication on a variety of subjects, concepts, and texts. We ask our students to leverage  their personal experiences and ideas to better understand the materials we are learning, and we find this personal connection yields a more efficient and meaningful learning experience for each child.

In addition to using the best, evidence-based teaching strategies and world-class curricula, our team uses science to better understand how to create an ideal learning experience for our students. We consider the complex makeup of the adolescent brain and the critical role neuroplasticity plays in enabling your child to learn and retain new information. We consider the evidence behind how a growth mindset enables students to overcome challenges they may face while learning, and we also empower our students to be active students who take responsibility for their learning. At GMV, we understand the science of learning and the vital components to help our students succeed.

Neuroplasticity Matters

A child’s brain is a brilliant and powerful tool capable of immeasurable growth and change. This is due, in part, because of neuroplasticity. During the first two and a half decades of a person’s life, the brain has copious amounts of neuroplasticity. The abundance of neuroplasticity allows a brain to be highly astute, adaptive, and capable of forming new neural connections. Neuroplasticity makes learning easier. Learning should therefore be embraced at a young age. Students should be encouraged to limitlessly explore new topics. Students engaging in diverse learning experiences are stimulating their brains by strengthening their natural inquisition and love for learning.

Growth Mindset

Students showcasing a willingness to work hard and persevere through challenges develop a strong ability to overcome obstacles. Developing a growth mindset allows students to foster a sense of resilience and a love for learning through the belief that intelligence and abilities are earned through persistence and determination.

Active Learning & Ownership of Knowledge

Active learning is an exciting process that involves asking questions, synthesizing information, and seeking connections to real world scenarios. Learning is most powerful when a student actively engages with material rather than trying to passively absorb it. Students should be encouraged to maximize their learning in class by taking notes, participating in discussions, and applying their knowledge in class projects and activities. At GMV, we encourage our students to take ownership of their learning by leaning into their natural curiosity and inquisitions. Students inspired to ask questions and seek answers will be fueled by their natural intrinsic motivation and rewarded with a passion for learning.

Understanding the science of learning provides us with helpful tools to support our students at Great Minds Virtual. By embracing knowledge of neuroplasticity, cultivating a growth mindset, and encouraging active learning and the ownership of knowledge, we empower our students to reach their full potential. At GMV, we are paving the way for a fulfilling and successful learning experience for every one of our students.
