Steven Shadel
Director of Great Minds Schools
Steven holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Concordia University and spent 15 years as a mathematics teacher, building leader, and school district leader.
Before joining Great Minds Schools, Steven most recently served as the executive director for K–12 Literacy and STEM in Skokie, IL, where he led teacher professional development and the implementation of high-quality curriculum materials. Prior to this leadership role, Steven taught math and served as building leader for his fellow math teachers.
As a teacher, Steven served on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) review committee as an Illinois representative. He also shared his classroom strategies through research studies at the University of Chicago.
Steven currently serves as the treasurer for the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and previously served as its elected regional director. He has also served as the elected board chair for the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM).
Steven has a background in music and athletics (in addition to mathematics). He is a lifelong Chicagoan and can often be seen enjoying a run with his family on the Chicago Lakefront. At home, he enjoys playing show tunes on the piano for his family.
