Alana Smith

Psychologist and Learning Strategist

Alana earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Miami and holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from Loyola Marymount University. She joins the Great Minds Virtual team with more than 10 years of experience as a school psychologist. Alana began her career at Green Dot Public Schools—a charter school district—at the middle and high school levels where she conducted educational evaluations, counseled students, and planned interventions. She later worked in Miami-Dade County Public Schools and, more recently, the Wake County Public School System at the K-5 levels, gaining valuable expertise in multitiered systems, team problem solving, and data-based decision-making. She uses her skills to support environments that allow all students to excel.

Alana also has experience as a learning specialist at the postsecondary level, guiding student-athletes and other students in need of additional support during their college years. The core of her work is advocating for youth to learn, think, and develop in healthy and supportive ways. She is excited to continue working at the intersection of quality teaching and emerging technology.

Originally from Los Angeles, Alana currently resides in Durham, North Carolina, with her husband and two children. You may find them fishing or enjoying food trucks or festivals on the weekends.
